System Requirements
- Linux server
- PHP 7.1+ (PHP 5.x no longer supported)
- MySQL/MariaDB 4.1+ OR PostgreSQL 9.1.5+
OJS Prerequisites
- OJS 2.4.0+
- Upgrade your 2.2.x or 2.3.x journal to 2.4.8-5 first
Safe Approach
- Ensure editors are ready for the upgrade
- Explore the OJS 3 live demo: https://demo.publicknowledgeproject.org/ojs3/testdrive
- Backup your OJS 2 database and files folder
- Review the upgrade log for warnings and errors
- Optional: Use a separate test install for upgrade
- If upgrade fails: restore OJS 2 install, consult PKP Forum
Upgrade process
- Preserves submissions, publications, and files
- But re-organizes database and files folder
- Review submissions and published content post-install
- Can't go back to OJS 2 after the upgrade (unless journal is restored from backups)
Customizations
- Major differences in page templates and code from OJS 2
- OJS 2 themes and customizations need to be adapted to OJS 3
- New themes available as-is or as starting points for customization
